BlueKolding

Formerly Kolding Spildevand (Kolding Wastewater), now BlueKolding – environment, energy, and climate company – covers the entire municipality of Kolding. We strive to secure a viable and sustainable world for each other and for the generations to follow. We inspire our customers and collaborative partners to assist us in achieving this target. We make Kolding climate proof, treat sewage and exploit our processes by e.g. producing electricity, clean water, and heating. And we also work towards encouraging everyone in our community – be they customers, suppliers or associates – to consider environment and sustainability from entirely new and more ambitious perspectives.

New name – New mindset

In 2015 Kolding Spildevand (Kolding Wastewater) changed its name to BlueKolding. We did this in recognition of the fact that our work area has come to encompass so much more than just ensuring the disposal and treatment of wastewater from households and business enterprises and ensuring that rain water is led back to nature. The new name is inspired by the phrase the Blue Economy – a new mindset focused on economy and sustainability. This concept is about aiming higher within the areas of environment, energy and climate. Where the green mindset is mainly focused on treating our nature in less abusive ways than we humans have so far been accustomed to, the blue mindset is focused on the effect of making better use of – on reusing to the benefit of nature.

From Abuse to use and reuse

Where, previously, we considered the task and process of cleaning wastewater as what we do, as our final objective, we are now considering this as an element in a more comprehensive process – with a more comprehensive objective. For if we intend to leave a habitable world to those coming after us – a world on which to build – then it will no longer be sufficient to think along the lines of being less abusive. The latter is the case when we discharge and clean our wastewater. Then it will do no harm when discharged into our inlets and streams. But this is not enough. We need to think the idea of making things more useful and the idea of reusing things into our actions and behaviour.

New house produces more energy than it consumes

For this reason we are constantly working to find new ways of exploiting the wastewater and improve our processes for cleaning it. We do so partly for the purpose of saving energy, but also in order to extract the heat and energy contained in the wastewater and then re-use it. Hence, we did not stop at building ourselves a new house that would use less energy than the old one. We have built a house that produces more energy than it consumes. From abuse. To use and reuse.

We exploit wastewater heat and energy

We do not stop at cleaning the wastewater to make it less harmful to the aquatic system into which we discharge it. We exploit the processes and the residual value for purposes of energy production which will provide both power and heating to the households, business enterprises and bus shelters of Kolding plus fertilizer for the town’s surrounding fields. From abuse. To use and reuse.

Monopoly means commitment

We primarily do so because our fundamental principle, at BlueKolding, is that monopoly means commitment. If you live in the Municipality of Kolding, you are automatically a customer with us. You have no other options, as we are the only enterprise providing the service of discharging rain and wastewater and cleaning the wastewater. BlueKolding owns and maintains the 2000 km of sewage pipes under roads, streets, and alleys all over the municipality. And we are also the ones owning and operating the six wastewater treatment plants in the municipality. This has been the case ever since the founding of the autonomous company Kolding Spildevand A/S, in 2010, and it still is – only we have changed our name into BlueKolding A/S.

Anything we do must be to the consumers’ benefit

If you live in Kolding you have no other option than to choose us as your provider with respect to the service of discharging and cleaning your water. Not even if you should not be satisfied with what we do or the way in which we perform our services. To us, this factor obliges us to do everything in our power to do our job in the best possible way. Further, we are also committed to do so as cost-effective as at all possible. So, when we invest in new solutions targeted at saving and producing energy, we do so for the purposes of avoiding being harmful to the environment and rather benefit the environment, whilst also keeping your expenses for our services as low as we possibly can. What we do must pay off – for you and for the environment. BlueKolding is a limited company which is 100% owned by the Municipality of Kolding – which is to say: by the Kolding citizens and enterprises. Hence, we cannot generate a profit from our services. What you pay us will be used for the operation and maintenance of sewage systems and wastewater treatment plants, for the climate proofing of Kolding against flooding, and for the investment in solutions which will be beneficial to the environment and secure an income that will make it cheaper for you to be a customer with us.

History and plans for wastewater treatment and climate-proofing

In 2010 Kolding’s municipal wastewater services were hived off into an autonomous limited company, with its own board, but still owned by the Municipality of Kolding. This company was named Kolding Spildevand A/S (Kolding Wastewater). In this connection, the company also took over the previously publicly operated technical wastewater plants and systems. In 2015, Kolding Spildevand changed its name into BlueKolding.

BlueKolding's history
In 2010 Kolding’s municipal wastewater services were hived off into an autonomous limited company, with its own board, but still owned by the Municipality of Kolding. This company was named Kolding Spildevand A/S (Kolding Wastewater). In this connection, the company also took over the previously publicly operated technical wastewater plants and systems. The Municipality of Kolding and BlueKolding’s responsibilities
The company’s main responsibility is the discharge and treatment of wastewater from such properties as were formerly elements in the municipal sewer services. The company’s objective is, moreover, to implement the majority of such planning initiatives and investments as described in the Municipality of Kolding’s Wastewater Plan. Further, BlueKolding is in charge of ensuring the feasibility of households’ connection to the wastewater system. We charge administration fees for connection and for the discharge of wastewater; and, also, we ensure the drainage of septic tanks in such areas where connection to the general wastewater system is not feasible. However, the Municipality of Kolding is still the area’s environment and wastewater authority; and, hence, the municipality will be in charge of the general legislative planning within the area of wastewater to ensure that any planning takes place subject to existing legislation and plans. Similarly, it will be the municipality’s responsibility to give permission to any direct discharge of wastewater or surface water/run-off into streams, lakes or coastal areas. The Municipality of Kolding is responsible for two overall plans which exert considerable influence on BlueKolding’s work:
Wastewater Plan 2012 - 2019
On 15 May 2012, the town council of the Municipality of Kolding adopted the Wastewater Plan 2012-2019 (Spildevandsplan 2012 – 2019). In this plan the Municipality of Kolding sets out how the municipality – in its capacity of wastewater and environment authority, together with BlueKolding – in its capacity of utility provider, will ensure that the municipality’s citizens and business enterprises will have access to efficient and reliable wastewater discharge and treatment The plan is to make sure that neither wastewater nor surface water will represent a hazard with respect to compliance with the environmental requirements relating to streams, lakes, coastal areas, and groundwater. The plan further describes how the municipality intends to take preventive measures to reduce such wastewater discharge as may lower the quality of beach water qualities, typically in connection with heavy rainfall during the summer period. The plan and its codes of practice must ensure a uniform treatment of citizens and business enterprises in connection with the implementation of the wastewater plan. The plan must further ensure transparency with respect to initiatives and measures to be introduced for the wastewater area within various districts of the municipality – and when.Last but not least, the plan also constitutes the legal foundation for various decisions and resolutions to be made by the municipality within the area of wastewater treatment.
Climate Plan 2007-2021 for the Municipality of Kolding
As an element in the long-term climate work, a long-term development plan – Energy Kolding (Energi Kolding) – was developed in 2007. The plan constitutes a tool for approaching the climate challenges and the rapid development within this area. The objectives of the plan are ambiguous and later, in 2008, they were fine-tuned in connection with the adoption of Strategy Kolding. The Municipality of Kolding’s final, 2021, objectives within energy and climate are:

  • A 75% reduction in CO2 emissions for each citizen as compared with 1990.
  • By 2021, the proportion of renewable energy must equal at least 50 percent.
  • The initiative will concentrate on enhanced focus on energy savings, on efficient and sustainable energy utilisation, and on climate adaptation.

The Blue mindset

When, in 2015, Kolding Spildevand changed its name to BlueKolding, this was owing to our being tremendously inspired by the concept of Blue Economy – a recent economic theory founded by Austrian-born, Professor of Economy, Günther Pauli. In his opinion, it will be necessary to raise the bar with respect to ambition levels within the green economy and mindset which, according to him, is focused on the introduction of less abusive actions with respect to environment and climate than we humans have practiced hitherto. According to Pauli this is not enough if we intend to secure the survival of our planet. For, if this is the case, we need to change strategies and increase our focus on use and reuse.

Imagine a world without waste
Green is focused on reducing consumption and waste – i.e. on doing less harm, on being less abusive. Taking this several steps further, Blue is about designing completely new sustainable systems that will exploit every resource available – including waste – in new value chains. The exact same approach already applied by us, at BlueKolding, today. The term ‘waste’ is simply non-existent in the Blue mindset vocabulary – as in ours. Any residual resource from one process will constitute the basis for another process. Nothing will go to waste; waste not – want not! The end of everything will constitute the beginning of something new. This may sound grand and ambitious. And so it is. But it will not mean that we will be downgrading on the mission for which we were originally brought into the world: Namely, to ensure Kolding’s citizens and businesses, our customers, that their wastewater will be received and properly treated in order that it can be discharged into nature. Nowadays, however, we consider wastewater and its treatment as a means to generate electricity, heat and clean water, rather than considering it as a waste product, a residual product – something to be got rid of. And our new approach actually works!
From wastewater to energy source
Where, earlier, we considered the task and the process of cleaning the wastewater as what we do, we now look at it as an element in a larger process – for a greater good. Because, if we want to leave our descendants with a world in which human life is possible – a world they can carry on, then it is no longer sufficient to think along the lines of doing less harm. And, basically, that is our point of departure when we discharge and treat the wastewater. Then it will do no harm when we send it back into stream or inlet. But this is not good enough. We need to think use and reuse into our actions! For this reason we have built a new house which is less energy consuming than the old one – we have, in fact, built a house which generates energy. More than it consumes, actually. For this reason, we are not satisfied by simply purifying the wastewater to prevent it from being harmful to the aquatic environment into which we discharge it. We exploit the processes and the residue to generate more energy, thus providing the households, enterprises and bus shelters of Kolding with power and heating – as well as fertilizer for the fields around the town. This is what the Blue mindset is all about. Not just less abuse – but also more use, more reuse.
The environment, energy and climate company of Kolding
BlueKolding is the new Kolding Spildevand – the environment, energy and climate company covering all of Kolding. We are the ones breaking the wastewater waves to the benefit of environment, climate, and public health – and we inspire and invite others to follow in our wake. Cooperating with suppliers, educational institutions and customers, we constantly strive to improve our work and to help one another with exploiting our shared resources even better. And, quite in line with the Blue Economy, we do this in ways which ensure a sound economy.
